Ms. Xu is my Chinese "JONI" editor with Huaxia Publishing House. When she read my manuscript for the first time, she was deeply moved by Joni's story and my efforts to fulfill this profound work. But in October of 1998, a terrible car accident took her husband's life. Her daughter had a back fracture and, almost paralyzed, Ms. Xu had fractured ribs.
Being concerned and thinking she was in such misery, the leader of the Huaxia Publishing House asked her to stop the work. They wanted to give her more time to rest and recover from her lost. They also wanted to arrange another editor for the book.
She insisted to continue the work because she knew that at this time in her life that the work had special meanings for her. When I met her in Beijing at the publication ceremony she stated, "It was 'JONI' " and your story that gave me the strength to overcome the misery and face my new life without my husband and cope with my daughter's injuries. Don't worry! I will do my best with this great book."
